3D Modeling and Printing (after school camp)

  • Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology 1490 West Broadway Vancouver, BC, V6H 4E8 Canada (map)

Ever wondered how printers can magically take a 3D model and turn it into a physical object? In this practical, small-group camp students explore their creativity by designing their own 3D models using Blender. They learn how 3D printers work and have the opportunity to print their own designs in VISST’s very own on-site Maker Lab on our state-of-the-art 3D printers.

When?

Every Friday, 4:30pm-6:00pm, March 31 - May 12, 2023.

Who?

This camp is for students aged 12+ years.

Cost:

The camp fee is $250 (including tax and all materials).

If the fee is a barrier to your participation, a limited number of bursaries are available for eligible families - please email camps@visst.ca to inquire.

Where?

The Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology (VISST) - 1490 West Broadway,Vancouver, BC.

Why should you attend?

  • Get your creative juices flowing and explore the practicality of how you can make your designs come to life.

  • Learn things that you won’t find in school, including hands-on practice with machines and tools of the future.

  • Design and print your own 3D models using VISST’s own 3D printers.

  • Earn a certificate of completion from the Vancouver Independent School for Science and Technology.

What will you learn?

Introduction to Blender: Before printing, students will need a model to work with. Students will learn the basics of Blender to model and sculpt their own creations using an ice cream sundae and a dinosaur as a starting point.

Printing How-To: How does the 3D printer actually work? Students will be shown the anatomy of the machine and how every component works in harmony to transform digital designs into real-world products.

Designing for Print: For 3D printers to print models, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure there are no issues during the printing process. Students will be shown what the common design errors are and how to remedy them before setting them up for print.

Custom Keychains: Students will be designing and printing their own keychains to demonstrate their understanding of both Blender and the 3D printer.

Invisible Projects: 3D printing isn’t just about printing figurines that are kept on a shelf. In this session students will learn how adjusting printer settings can lead to nifty effects, such as tokens with secret messages.

Printing Workshop: Students will have the opportunity to design and print some of their own models with guidance and support from instructors.

Camp Instructor
